Why did my doctor recommend a fecal immunochemical test (FIT)?
Your doctor has recommended that you complete a FIT test to screen you for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer includes both colon and rectal cancer and is the third most diagnosed cancer in both men and women in the United States. Many colorectal cancers and deaths can be prevented with the use of established screening tests, one such test is the FIT test:
Benefits of FIT test:
- Convenient home collection kit
- Sensitivity 71% – 91%
- Specificity 90 % – 95%
What does my result mean?
Negative result: means no blood was found in the stool but it does not rule out colorectal cancer and you still need to continue screening according to the physician’s recommendations
Positive result: means blood was identified in the stool and it could be associated with colorectal cancer, we recommend you to seek the advice of your health care provider.
Note: FIT tests have a 30-40% sensitivity of picking up precancerous lesions.
